Our research

We are motivated to explore how we can supply our future needs while stepping up climate change mitigation across a variety of engineering domains, such as buildings, transport , industry, food production, and energy systems.

We use a wide range of engineering approaches to reveal the trade-offs of interventions and their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions faster, while delivering the energy and material services that we need.

Our research spans across a variety of sectors, as shown below.

Industry

Our group explores ways of using plastics and fertilisers without emissions.

We also explore the role of critical minerals in decarbonisation.

Transport

Electrification of ground transport is essential to meet climate targets. But a reduction in energy demand is needed to make electrification feasible. Our work explores how this can be done and what are the trade-offs.

Buildings

Building use and construction account for almost 1/3rd of global emissions. Our research explores how can we meet our housing and space needs within the global Carbon budget.

Energy systems

Meeting climate targets will require the electrification of most energy uses, and the decarbonisation of our grid. But how we bring that about? How much energy storage will be needed? And what’s the role of hydrogen in decarbonisation?
